Discount retailer Big Lots has announced plans to close 35 to 40 stores this year as part of network changes and amid bankruptcy considerations. A recent financial filing revealed both the store closure plans and millions in lost sales.

Despite the closures, Big Lots plans to open three new stores during the remainder of the year. However, the closures will significantly impact the company's overall store count.

In a statement, Big Lots said that the closures are part of "a proactive strategy to optimize our store portfolio and enhance long-term profitability." The company did not specify which locations would be affected.

Big Lots currently operates over 1,400 stores across the United States. California is home to 109 Big Lots locations, but the company has not disclosed whether any of them will be among the closures.
